You have been told C++ is hard.
This book agrees — and then shows you exactly how to handle it.

Boring C++ is a practical, no-shortcuts guide to modern C++ for programmers who already know at least one language. You do not need a computer science degree, a background in systems programming, or a high tolerance for undefined behavior. You need the ability to write a loop and call a function. Everything else is in these pages.

The name is a promise. Every example compiles and runs. Every concept is introduced once, clearly, and then repeated with small variations until it stops being a thing you look up and starts being a thing you just do. Nothing is left mysteriously incomplete. Nothing requires you to already know the thing you are trying to learn.

By the end of this book you will be able to:

  • Write classes with correct constructors, destructors, and copy/move semantics
  • Manage memory confidently using smart pointers and RAII — without ever calling delete directly
  • Use the standard library's containers and algorithms the way they were meant to be used
  • Write generic code with templates and C++20 Concepts that produces readable error messages
  • Handle errors cleanly with exceptions, std::optional, and std::expected
  • Write concurrent programs with threads, mutexes, and std::async
  • Apply modern idioms: const-correctness, noexcept, std::format, std::span
  • Build a complete multi-file project with CMake from scratch

Dariush Abbasi is a C++ developer with more than a decade of experience writing performance-critical software. He writes at github.com/dariubs. Boring C++ is his second book.
